Imagine stepping into a dark, dingy home. It wouldn’t matter what else it had going for it; the lack of natural light would be somewhat off-putting. Now, picture setting foot into a bright space with plenty of natural light pouring in from all directions. The impact of natural light on how you feel about the property would be significantly more positive, even if the house had other limitations.

So, if you’re living in a space that’s not as bright as you’d like it to be, and you believe that increasing the natural light would make a significant impact, read on. We’ve got some great tips to maximise natural light and elevate your living space.

Light Colours

Recent trends have leaned towards bold wallpapers and colour blocks on walls, but these choices actually absorb natural light rather than reflecting it. To enhance the natural light in your home, consider using lighter shades like white or off-white. These colours will reflect the natural light coming into the room, making the space brighter. But be cautious with brilliant white, as it can make a room feel cold, especially when reflecting natural light.

Shiny Surfaces

In spaces like your kitchen and bathroom, shiny surfaces can significantly amplify the natural light. Glossy countertops, tiles, or cupboard doors will reflect light and make your rooms appear brighter. If white doesn’t fit your taste, light grey or pale blue are good alternatives that can also increase natural light.

Flooring

Your choice of flooring can also have a big impact on the amount of natural light in your home. Light wood, stone, tile, or ceramic flooring can reflect light well. On the other hand, even light-coloured carpets can absorb light and make a room seem darker. If you opt for carpet, avoid patterns as they draw attention away from the natural light in the room.

Clean Windows

It sounds simple, but clean windows can significantly increase the amount of natural light entering your home. Regular cleaning, both inside and out, not only enhances natural light but also improves your view.

Plants

Any outdoor greenery near your windows can block natural light. Make sure to trim any trees, shrubs, or flowers that might be obscuring the light and preventing it from illuminating your indoor spaces.

By taking these steps, you can effectively maximize the natural light in your home, creating a brighter, more inviting space.
